Reviews (1 credit each)                                      (click for sample)

In general, the reviews I am looking for are relatively short, insightful, clearly stated
opinions on an anime title. I am NOT looking for a quick "review" of what happens
during such-and-such an epsiode, what the plot is all about, or even whether or not
it is a good anime. What I am more interested in is WHY you think what you do, and
why you gave it the scores you did.

A review consists of two parts, the Scores and the Comments. First, the Scores.
If you decide to review an anime title, you will need to rate it on a scale of 1 to 10
(no 1/2 points, please!) on the following categories:

    The  Five  (5)  Categories
    1. Artistry:
how does the anime LOOK and does it appeal to the senses?
    2. Character development: how well developed are the characters?
    3. Clarity: does the anime clearly get the storyline across to the viewer?
    4. Plot: is the plot original or well-thought out? Is it fun? Exciting? Funny?
    5. Style: how is the anime as a whole presented? Does it fit together nicely?

     Overall Rating
10 = *THIS* is what anime is all about!
      9 = An absolute MUST SEE series/movie!
8 = Great anime, well worth your time!
7 = If you've got time, get this!
6 = An above average anime.
      5 = Your average anime. It's okay.
4 = Not a bad anime, but not great.
3 = May not be worth your time.
2 = Poor anime, save your time.
      1 = Don't insult my intelligence!!
0 = The writers should be KILLED...

IMPORTANT!!! Please note that 5 is your average anime -- and I mean this literally.
The majority of the scores you give, over time, should be 5, as that is what "average"
is defined as. This does not mean that you have to have more 5's than other numbers,
it just means that IF you reviewed EVERY anime you've ever seen, MOST of them
WOULD be 5s. Please try to set this as your baseline.

Secondly, also note that 10 is "what anime is all about." This is the pinnacle of anime,
in your opinion, and theoretically there should be no more than one '10'. This does not
mean that you can only give one 10, but it does mean to be VERY serious about your
decision if you decide to give it a 10. Please be aware that I have not given any overall
10s yet, though I have given individual 10s in one of the 5 categories before. Which
brings me to my next point:

Technically, there is a sixth score, an OVERALL score. This score is your overall
rating of the title. THIS HAS NO RELATION TO THE OTHER FIVE SCORES!!!
That means that theoretically, you could give each of the 5 categories a '3' and the
OVERALL a '9' if that's the way you really felt. The OVERALL score is pretty much
a rating of how the anime left you feeling, whether you actually have a reason for it or
not. For example, one of the reasons I like Birdy the Mighty so much is that it was the
first fansubbed anime I had ever seen, so I didn't know what to expect. This feeling
does not really fit into any of the five categories, but nevertheless I felt it important to
include it, so that's why the OVERALL score is slightly higher than the other five
   scores.

Finally, the comments section. This is where you get to explain why you gave the
scores that you did. Please try not to give away any secrets or endings, but do feel free
to cite specific examples of things you really liked. Remember, specifics are
remembered most when reading a review! Keep the comments section fairly short, but
make sure to include everything you wish to say. Take a look at my, Ataru, and Akito's
review of Whisper of the Heart to gauge how long the comments should be.

Please also remember that as a member of KRP, you are now a "professional" critic
and I expect you to act accordingly. And last but not least... remember to enjoy it. The
review process should be FUN and bring back memories of the anime series.  Arigato!

--- Hints and Reminders ---
•  Try not to give away too much of the plot  •
•  BE SPECIFIC! This is much more effective than "It was great!"  •
•  Use specific examples that caught your attention.  •
•  If this was "your type" of anime, explain why.  •
•  Remember that '5' is your AVERAGE score and is NOT bad!  •
•  Have Fun!  •

Descriptive Summaries(2 credits each)            (click for sample)

The Descriptive Summary is the box at the top of the review page that has the picture
on the left and a general outline of the anime's storyline on the right. I must warn you,
I have found writing the summaries to be MUCH harder than writing the reviews,
which is the main reason why my own summaries take so long to write. These are the
specifications to which the Desriptive Summary must be written:

   •  DO NOT GIVE AWAY THE PLOT! PERIOD! A little explanation of the plot, or
perhaps even a description of the start of it, is fine and usually very effective. Do
not, however, give away any secrets from the plot, tell the end of the story, or go
into too much detail about certain events that take place. If there is a surprise
ending, DO NOT ruin it by saying "you'll love the surprise ending!" but rather
only hint at it by saying something like "you may find that it's worth watching just
       to see the ending alone!"

   •  BE OBJECTIVE! And I mean as COMPLETELY and TOTALLY objective as
humanly possible. If you thought a plot device or a certain character was especially
well done, write a review, but DON'T include those thoughts in your Desc-summary.

   •   If the summary is for a "continuous theme" series or movie (ie. Lupin III movies),
then feel free to indicate which aspects of previous titles of the same theme were
missing from the one you're reviewing, but be sure not to "review" them. For
example, the following line about "Lupin III: Dark Order of Assassination" would
be unacceptable for a Desc-summary and should be in a review instead:
"The hilarious situations Lupin and Zenigata get into while working together
are reason enough to crack-up, but this doesn't stop them from taking on a foe
much larger than the both of them!"

      Instead, use something like:
"...and for the first time, Lupin teams up with his 'rival' Zenigata to bring down
a force larger than the both of them!"

   •
Don't take it personally if I reject your Desc-summary. Because of the high
standards I've imposed on the Desc-summary, I have to be 'strict' as to what I
will allow and what I won't. I am ALWAYS happy to receive a Desc-summary of
a title that does not yet have one, so if your Desc-summary isn't quite acceptable,
I will actually email you with suggestions on improving it. Note that this is ONLY
for Desc-summaries: if you write a review that I reject, I may not even contact
you and almost certainly won't offer suggestions, unless I think your review was
        especially good.

That's it for specifications! Writing a Desc-summary isn't all that bad once you get
used to it, and it helps to write it immediately after watching the anime. I seriously
suggest watching the anime title you wish to write a Desc-summary for a couple
of times, a few days apart, so that you can think about it in-between. Enjoy!
