REVIEW of:
Saber Marionette
J
![]() |
In the not so distant
future, the Earth is virtually overflowing into space from the massive
population overload. In an attempt to relieve this problem, giant colony
ships are built and sent into outerspace, hoping to colonize new worlds.
One such ship found its way to a new planet, but something went terribly
wrong and during a crash landing, all the women and all but six men were
killed. These six men soon realized that there was no way to populate the
entire planet.... unless they built a population! After much work,
the men had successfully cloned themselves, and eventually, created android
women. Unfortunately, the android women were just that -- androids -- and
as such, could not feel happy nor sad, pleased nor pained. These androids
were called Marionettes, and each of the six original colonists, along
with their clones, created a new country on this world. 300 years later,
our hero Otaru (center), on a visit to a Japones (New Japan) musuem, accidentally
awakens an ancient Marionette, Lime (lower right). Something is definitely
different about this Marionette... she seems so human! Otaru subsequently
awakens Cherry (upper right) and Bloodberry (let), both of whom also seem
human! But how is this possible? Where did they come from? Watch the series
to find out! Saber Marionette J originally aired on Japanese TV for
one year, and there are 25 episodes in the original series. -

| Comments | Together,
this and Birdy the Mighty make up two of my most
favorite Anime series! I find Saber Marionette J to be simultaneously clever,
cute, energetic, exciting, hilariously funny, and whimsical! I especially
enjoy the character- to-character interaction, as the characters play off of each other wonderfully! I'll admit that while the plot is freshly original, many of the episodes seem to have redundant sub-plots, but I disagree with Akito-sempai's charge that "three robotic girls and one guy chasing one Otaru is the story over and over again." True, it pops up a lot, but I find a lot more going on than just that. I mean, to begin with, Otaru and his gang have to avert a war! And something on a scale that large cannot be accomplished in one episode. In fact, I find the continuity between episodes to be quite exciting and anticipate every following episode. Not to mention the "surprise ending" at the end of the series... And regardless of what Akito-baka, err... I mean Akito-san says, I find Lime's voice to be cute and sweet! No wonder she's listed as one of my "Favorite Anime Characters" in my info page. Teehee! In essence, I recommend this series to any lover of anime, whether serious collector or casual viewer! You must see this! |
Wells, I just want to say I love the characters in this movie, especially the three Marionettes. Either than the fact that the movie says they are machines, everything else tells me otherwise. Part of the joy of watching this anime series is seeing these 3 characters grow. They are like people with no memory of whatever whatsoever, so they start from scratch, and like kids, they show their interest in little things like why is the sky blue. Each individual marionette has their own personalities. I also found the plot to be very interesting. I mean think about it. The setting of this series is unique. As soon as you watch the first few episodes, I’m sure you’ll fall in love with it. It’s hecka funny too! I mean it’s hilarious to watch this thing, but it’s also dramatic. Even the enemy characters are real. So real that you might even feel sorry for what they had to go through. The plot might seem simple, but there are a lot of twists and turns in each individual character development. Just watch it, you’ll see. =) | Here is one piece of anime that Kiwi and I disagree on. To be honest, the premise of world full of men and marionnetes only is very unique and promising, however this show quickly turns repetitive. I have to admit though there are hillarious moments throughout the series,. Yet, three robotic girls and one guy chasing one Otaru is the story over and over again. There is no real character development whatsoever. None of the three robots seem to change due to their nature and Otaru does not seem to mature as time progresses. A annoying thing about the show is the voice of Lime done by Megumi Hayashibara. This accounts for the low Artistry score. There are times you just want her to shut up. Not that she is a bad voice actress its just that I believe her Rei (Evangelion) and Lina (Slayers) characterizations are much much better. So, if you want a mindless show that will keep you laughing and doesn't tax the brain cells then this is your anime. But, if you want a more mentally stimulating anime, well... I would have to recommend something else. |
