REVIEW of:
My Dear Marie (Boku no Mari)

My Dear Marie      My Dear Marie is an amusing story about the geeky, nerdy madscientist Hiroshi Karigari and his infatuation with fellow college student, Mari (sometimes translated as Mary). After joing the Tennis club for the secret purpose of being near her, he uses his technical expertise to monitor Mari and form an android that looks just like her! The funny thing is, before Karigari has a chance to turn her on, she somehow activates herself in the middle of the night! When Karigari awakes, he finds quite a surprise -- Mari is sitting right across from him on his bed, only it's not MARI, it's MARIE! After telling Marie she must never leave the house (for fear that she might be discovered, since, after all, he modeled her exactly after Mari, and he can't let anyone know that he has a crush on her!), Marie (of course) leaves anyway when Karigari forgets his tennis racket. What ensues is a chance meeting with Mari and her "boyfriend", Tanaka, and to explain Marie's sudden appearance, Karigari tells everyone she's his sister!  This eventually leads to a competitive tennis match, Mari vs. Marie, where the winner's "partner" dates the losers "partner". What happens? I'll let you find out yourself. =) My Dear Marie is more than 3 episodes long, as far as I know, but only 3 were fansubbed as the commercial release of this title is due out in June/July of 1998. - Kiwi

Comments Although the beginning of this series reminded me a lot of many other anime titles, the more I watched the more I found My Dear Marie (Boku no Mari) to forge a name of it's own. Granted, the first episode is not full of highly distinctive characterization, but then again what introductory episode is? As I said earlier, the more I watched, the more I enjoyed. I found the third episode particularly well done, both in its realism and on its ability to pull you right into the story. The development of the android Marie was particularly entertaining for me, as she reminded me so much of a child. Although the drama is, of course, nice, the series is definitely not without its own cache of humor. The situations Karigari falls into, the innocent ignorance of Marie, and the remarkable similarity between Mari and Marie make for quite some humorous times. In all, I'd have to recommend this title for its humor, its realism, and its overall aura.
